When a song hugs me and refuses to let me go, I have to write about it.
“Forever,” Jessie Reyez x 6Lack has placed me in a chokehold and will not let me go. My son has even anticipated the repetitive card drive back and forth through town and has learned to enjoy it.
Jessie Reyez’ body of work can be found in most of the playlist we curate at the Self Love Song and here’s why: Jessie is the queen of taking her feelings, putting them into words, giving you the visual, and most importantly, makes you feel the impact.
When she starts the track, she so creatively begins with the vibrations of her voice meshed over smooth ass acoustics. (oooooo, somebooodddy).
As the beat builds ( & on her own voice) how throat chakra of her, she straight up talks about security within herself, and what she brings to the vibe of any connection:
‘passwords, that means you love me,
I can give you what you ask for,
Say you need a shooter,
I can do it from the half court,
I can change ya life by painting murals on your passport,
Your future kids all on ya dashboard, oooo’
I think it’s extremely powerful to know exactly what your value is.
This can be intimidating to some people and attractive to others but regardless, when you know your value you don’t leave or enter any situation losing anything. You either align with people who value themselves the same, or they see life differently, and therefore you part ways. Either way, all is well, and it’s important to always remember that everything happens just as it should, and right when it should.
She then transitions to the bridge with:
‘now sometimes somebody love somebody ‘
But that body don’t love them back,
And it’s easy to say that you didn’t know,
You ain’t know what you had,
But you don’t – you’re educated,
You know, that they don’t make them like me,
Anymore-
So you pull me close & say stay… forever…’
This is your reminder to not fight the current that the waves of life may take you on as you grow, love, share space and evolve as an overall human being. Your mind can take you places and allow you to experience your deepest desires but that requires you to be authentic first. Make sure you’re taking the time to connect with yourself, analyze your intentions, and to ensure you’re connected spiritually. This helps you stay in balance of who you are, what you’re valued, and how you can be valuable to others.
Jessie speaks about holding onto the things and people who love you deeply and authentically. One of my favorite set of lines of first verse:
‘I like every flaw I see in you…
This is all new…
But I hope I got what you need too;
I hope I got what you need, too…’
She sees her partner fully and loves every part of what she’s shown. She wants to be of value just as much as she knows her value… powerful balance.
I think it’s so damn vulnerable yet sexy to tell somebody:
“I think you should put your bags down, you should never leave.”
Like, hey bae. Put down all that baggage you were carrying and let’s go flow together.
(God if it’s out there fahhh meeeee)
*stands in the need of prayer*
Lmao, not but seriously ya’ll…
Both Jessie and 6Lack are master poets and together they have created a ballad. So, take the time, on whatever streaming platform you have, WE RECOMMEND AND ENCOURAGE TIDAL. (Here’s why) & let this song marinade right into the pores of your very skin.
(my son also thinks Jessie Reyez & 6lack should date?)
Saw them at Dreamville and was like, ehhh f*ck yes.
